Research

The National Center for Family Group Decision Making has compiled a summary of current and past research and evaluation projects in Family Group Decision Making. This summary includes local, national, and international research and evaluation projects, links to or contact information for ordering copies of full studies if they're available, and instruments used for data collection. For a list of instruments used in evaluating FGDM processes, visit the Evaluation & Research Tools section of their website or Evaluation & Reports for the current research.

Restorative Practices in Schools in Southend and Tackling Truancy in Southend using FGC are two evaluations carried out over a two year period beginning in 2002. The Family Group Conference Service ran both models. These are the initial findings of their attempts to tackle behaviour and absenteeism.

Introducing Restorative Justice DVD
A Positive Approach in Schools


A film commissioned by Milton Keynes Psychological Service and professionally produced by Living Archive.

This DVD illustrates Restorative Justice in action. It demonstrates the value of this constructive approach in resolving conflicts and repairing damaged relationships in school communities. It has a particular relevance for:

  • Fighting
  • Serious behaviour incidents
  • Relationship issues

Could you be a Family Group Conference Co-ordinator?

The Berkshire Family Group Conference Project is looking for dynamic individuals who are committed to the principles of working in partnership with, and empowerment of, families.
 
A family group conference is a family-led, decision-making meeting which is called when families need to take decisions and make plans to address concerns about the safety, well-being or behaviour of their child.
 
The role of the Family Group Conferences Co-ordinator is to help the family and those who work with the family to arrange a family group conference.
 
Family Group Conferences Co-ordinators need to have a proven ability to relate to people in a non-judgemental way. Good communication skills are essential. Knowldege of social services, education, health or youth justice would be helpful but not essential.
 
  • Co-ordinators are self-employed and are paid on a sessional basis. They need to be self-motivated and able to work flexibly. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
  • Co-ordinators are expected to work across three unitary authorities: Reading, Bracknell Forest and Wokingham.
  • Training and supervision are provided
  • Candidates will have to attend an interviews and and successful applicants will receive a three day training course
